Mount Cook Adventure Centre is turning Key Stage 2 history into a hands-on adventure where pupils don’t just learn about the past, they live it. With immersive curriculum activities built around Prehistoric Britain, Roman Invaders, and Viking Explorers, children have the chance to experience history in the most engaging way possible.

Our first historical journey takes place over 10,000 years ago where students will join a Stone Age hunter-gatherer tribe. With a choice of rockin’ activities, students could go from learning about awareness of nature around them, to creating natural horsehair paintbrushes and paint pigments to design their own cave art! This topic also offers self-resilience building activities such as archery & archaeological digs; or if you aim to build the group closer together, our fire-lighting and shelter construction session will be ideal.

The Roman Invader theme is full of energy, discipline, and discovery. Pupils can step into the sandals of a legionnaire during Legion training, where they dress as soldiers, practise marching drills, and learn to move in formation as a Roman unit. They can then test their accuracy and strategy in archery and throwing, a fast-paced session that introduces combat skills and the tactics used by Roman armies. Schools can also choose sessions that dig deeper into daily life, such as uncovering replica artifacts in an archaeological dig, learning survival skills through fire lighting, or turning their hands to practical crafts by manufacturing leather pouches and even building carts to drive!

Our final Key Stage 2 history package is the Viking Explorer. The students have opportunity to Dress the Viking, handling clothing, weapons, and shields to get a sense of how these fierce explorers lived. Another option is Runes and longboat building, which combines the challenge of decoding Viking messages with the creativity of constructing a model longship. Schools could also opt for more practical activities such as bushcraft and cordage making, or archaeological excavations to uncover Viking artifacts.

Schools can choose between day trips running from morning until late afternoon or extend the adventure with residential options that include evening activities. Each experience is designed to meet Key Stage 2 history learning objectives while building resilience, teamwork, and independence in a fun, memorable setting.
