Do you and your family want more nature themed activities to do while outside? Elliott from Mount Cook Adventure Centre talk about their ideas for summer fun for families with younger children or children with additional needs. Read more below…
5. Nature Journaling
Nature journaling is the act of observing and recording the wilderness around you. This could include drying flowers and leaves to stick in a journal, writing detailed descriptions or poems about the beautiful scenes around you, or drawing the wildlife and plants nearby. If you want a simple activity, a notebook and Sellotape is all you need to start building your fallen leaf portfolio while on your walk! This builds observational skills and is also a form of mindfulness.
We work with a wonderful business who do activities such as this; they are called Wild Roots, and you should check them out here! Head out nature journaling today to increase your children’s appreciation for nature!

4. Rainbow hiking
This is an amazing way to keep your children engaged and observing on a walk. Rainbow walks or hikes are the practice of walking until you have seen something in each colour of the rainbow, whether you remember these in your head, take a photo or write it down is up to you!
You may think certain colours will be hard to find but there is a lot more colour in nature than you would expect. Hunt for flowers, bugs, mushrooms, and more to build your wildlife rainbow! This nature themed activity sheet is attached below...
3. Geocaching
I’m sure plenty of parents have heard of this from the app previously going viral but if not, this is an outdoor activity in which people use their phone and navigational techniques to hunt for “Geocaches”. Each geocache (or also known as ‘caches’) are marked with co-ordinates that are given on the app and will sometimes contain a small prize. These rewards are typically a small toy, keychains, custom-made ‘geocoins’, painted pebbles, or even some will have co-ordinates to another cache in the area!
2. Sensory walks
These walks are amazing for children to develop confidence and knowledge of the world around them. A sensory walk is quite self-explanatory, using your senses! Walk around feeling different leaves, moss, and fungi, smelling different flowers, listening for different birds. These walks will stimulate your senses and spark your imagination!
The only disclaimer for this activity is that it is very important to teach your children that nature is gentle and to be careful while touching delicate flowers or plants, and to ensure they are using hand sanitiser as much as possible.
I have made a nature themed activity sheet for this that is linked below...
